American Red Cross
Created by the Geneva Conventions of 1864 and launched in the US in 1881, the American Red Cross is a 501c3 nonprofit, tax-exempt charitable organization that also operates under a Congressional Charter as a partner to federal and state emergency management agencies to provide mass care (ESF-6) in times of disaster. The congressional charter also outlines Services to the Armed Forces that are provided by all Red Cross chapters. Chapters also provide health and safety training, blood collection and international services. Supported by a small professional staff, the Red Cross work is done through a network of more than 300,000 trained volunteers.
The American Red Cross prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors. Red Cross volunteers: 1. Provide shelter, food, health and mental health support, referral services and emergency financial assistance following disasters; 2. Provide emergency communication and other services to members of our armed forces and their families; 3. Ensure the nation has a ready supply of safe blood and blood products; 4. Teach life-saving skills including first aid/CPR/water safety and other courses; 5. As a member of the International Red Cross, provide international services when needed.
